The Newbury and District Amateur Radio Society

WINS AN AWARD

The Newbury and District Amateur Radio Society (NADARS), a local club in Newbury for anyone interested in Amateur Radio and electronics, is pleased to announce that they have just been awarded a grant OF NEARLY £10,000 by the National Lottery under the AWARDS FOR ALL SCHEME. These grants are provided by the Lottery to help local clubs. NADARS will use the Lottery money, to run training courses for amateur radio licence examinations, to administer examinations for the amateur radio licence for which we are authorised by OFCOM (the governments ‘Office for Communications’), to provide amateur radio awareness exhibitions and demonstrations at local events and to operate portable amateur radio stations – for emergency planning, demonstrations and of course the enjoyment of all our club members!.

NADARS and its members have been successfully running the examination courses in the Newbury community to enable members of the public to obtain a licence to allow them to transmit ‘on the air’. There are three exams: A basic ‘Foundation Licence’ is obtained after a two-day starter course. This may lead onto an ‘Intermediate Course’ and then an ‘Advanced Licence’ (the choice is yours). The hobby and the examinations are open to people of all ages, from primary school children to pensioners, and we would emphasise that these examinations are not difficult so everyone can quickly start enjoying this amazing hobby!!!.

Amateur Radio - the 21st Century hobby!

You can link up with others around the world with a similar interest. Amateur Radio encompasses all methods of radio communication from working through satellites in space, bouncing signals off the moon, microwave links, television, to simple radio contacts with people in your local town or the other side of the world. You can even talk to the astronauts on the International Space Station! You can take part in radio contesting, radio orienteering, contact remote islands and countries around the world and make many new friends from all races and cultures - there are no barriers to radio waves. For some people, considerable use is made of computers and many amateurs construct their own equipment, whilst others start by using a low cost piece of radio equipment (or even one loaned from the NADARS pool of club equipment ! ).

It is up to you what you do within the hobby. Amateur Radio has something for everyone who has an interest in radio communications. It can, and has for many, provide the platform to an interesting and exciting career.

Would you like to know more ? The Newbury Club normally meets on the fourth Wednesday of each month at 7:30pm in the conference room behind the Travellers Friend Public House at Crookham Common, between Thatcham and Brimpton.

To join the hobby is simple and we would be very pleased to welcome you at any of our meetings.

Why not contact our club secretary for advice, to find out more and to discover a whole new world. This could be your start to a whole new journey of exploration – It could change your life!
